The View from Diana Ferguson’s Jewelry Studio

On the first part of the journey… April 15, 2009

WE’RE ON THE ROAD AGAIN. This time to Fort Worth, TX for the MAIN Street Ft. Worth Arts Festival. Our ROUTE is from Phoenix to Fort Worth, via Albuquerque and Oklahoma City. This picture has the Odyssey pointed toward Albuquerque – specifically, the Holiday Inn Express at the Eubank exit 165. All in all, travels were smooth on Monday — good weather, no traffic, and still enough Starbucks stores at the exits to sustain the proper caffeine buzz. A weak brew at the HIE Tuesday  morning had me hoping the opportunity for something stronger would present itself.

On the first part of the journey

I was looking at all the life

There were plants and birds and rocks and things

There was sand and hills and rings

The first thing I met was a fly with a buzz

And the sky with no clouds

The heat was hot and the ground was dry

But the air was full of sound

I’m always amazed at how a few hours can be so transformative (thankfully). This is my booth at the Edwards Fine Art & Sculpture Festival as it goes from chaos to orderliness in just a few short hours.

Uh oh... just a few hours to go.

Uh oh… just a few hours before show time.

Back from Colorado July 24, 2008

Here are a few pics from our Colorado tour. We had a blast, and two very good shows. Thanks to everyone who came out to the support the art and the artists! That being said, it’s great to be back at work in the studio, not to mention comfy in our home sweet home. We head out for Park City, UT and then Frisco, CO late next week!

”Artist Caravan”, Edwards Fine Art & Sculpture Festival.

Ken at the Cameron, AZ Post Office. How appropos for a USPS stamp artist!

Moi, looking a lot fresher than I felt. It was about 100 degrees that afternoon…

Monument Valley from the car. The drive from Phoenix to Edwards and Aspen via Moab is not to be missed!

 6th Annual Aspen Arts Festival.

 Nearing Moab.

A well-located Starbucks in Grand Junction, CO.

Some of the prettiest places are closest to home. This shot was outside of Flagstaff.

It all fits …well, we didn’t have Ken’s paintings in the car at this point but we could see it was all going to work. Eureka!!!

The Odyssey that turned into a Caravan July 8, 2008

In May, I posted that Ken and I were heading up to Colorado for a couple of shows in July (Edwards and Aspen) and that we were ANXIOUS about fitting all the show gear for TWO booth displays into our Honda Odyssey. Well, oddly enough, that became a non-issue since the Odyssey has suddenly turned into a Dodge Caravan. Long story short, our Odyssey has been at Bell Honda for about 4 weeks awaiting a replacement SPEEDOMETER CLUSTER. Through our warranty, we’ve had a rental car for the entire time; and just yesterday switched out from a Ford SUV of some sort to the Dodge Caravan. So far, we’ve got the van about 1/2 loaded and are waiting for the 105 degree temp to dissipate somewhat before we finish up later this evening. Thus far, it seems like everything is going to fit. We’re amazed, needless to say. Especially since, because the Enterprise lady said the vehicle measured only six feet from behind the driver seat with all the seats down, and our panels are seven feet, we were pretty sure we were going to have to carry them on the roof (NOT SO GOOD). The measurement turned out to be 7′4″ so we were able to get the panels inside. We hit the road tomorrow… yay! P.S. We are baffled that any car part could take four weeks (or more) to ship. Apparently, Honda only tooled enough of these parts for the Odysseys that were made in 2006. To get a new one made for our model, they have to retool the machines to make the part and… blah blah blah. We are expecting the part to arrive on July 14 but — since there have been several delays already, we are not holding our breath.

A brief post to note my TRUNK SHOW at Raku Gallery in Jerome, Arizona on SATURDAY, JULY 5 from 10am to 8:00pm. Located on Cleopatra Hill in Jerome, Raku is a gorgeous gallery that is well known for outstanding art and a fabulous view overlooking the Verde Valley and the red rocks of Sedona. I am more than pleased to have the opportunity to personally represent my work here during the Saturday of the July Art Walk. If you’re in the area, please stop by! I’d love to meet you and tell you more about my jewelry and my process.

My good “last two days”… June 22, 2008

Diana\'s works in progress  My “works in progress”, June 18 2008.

For me, weekends and weekdays are not really DISTINGUISHABLE from each other, so I will just say that it’s been a very SATISFACTORY last two days! Here’s WHY.

1) A supply of wood I ordered came on Saturday. I’m planning to incorporate hand constructed wood components into my pieces in various ways and getting the wood in hand was of course the FIRST STEP. I’ve got CHERRY, OAK, ASH and MAPLE to work with, as shown in the pic.

2) I received my latest PMC order and am looking to do some bezels and more of my “Variation on a Bead” necklaces with this material.

3) I confirmed a trunk show with Raku Gallery in Jerome, Arizona for Saturday, July 5 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. Very cool …and more on this event in a later post.

4) I have gotten well along into a new version of my ”Drakon” bracelet, as well as a new collar that will be about 2-1/2 wide and very drapey. I have some great ideas for embellishments on this piece, so stay tuned.

5) Our new (and second) LIGHT DOME canopy came, so we are now officially set to go from an equipment perspective for the July shows …whew. Still worrying about how to fit it all in the Odyssey. Which, by the way, is in the shop for a malfunctioning speedometer cluster.

6) My Gathering at the Great Divide acceptance came in the mail, which completes my show schedule for this summer. This show by the way is in Breckenridge, Colorado. We got rained on big time last year!

7) A business development that I’m very excited about but can’t discuss yet…

8) Last but not least, it was only 103 today and not 114, like yesterday …yay!

Not bad for two days, huh?

Moi… Starbucks in hand (black, Pike’s Place blend).

My partner in crime …p.s. thanks for fetching that Starbucks.

Saturday slow start. Maybe due to Friday’s bad economic news, or gas at $4.09/gallon?
Sunday was a little better…

My friend Pat Kelly, chillin’ … the weather was perfect.

See ya at Territorial Days June 7, 2008

This weekend, I’m at Territorial Days in Prescott, AZ. Have some great new bracelets, including this one, with a gorgeous carnelian and sterling silver clasp. Well, have to run… if you come, I’m in space 76, by the Gazebo!
